How to Change Your Apple Watch Band Step by Step

How to change an Apple Watch band by pressing the release button, sliding the band, and checking the click
Most Apple Watch band swaps come down to three motions: press, slide, and click.

Short answer: place your Apple Watch face down on a soft surface, press one band release button, slide that side of the band sideways out of the slot, then repeat on the other side. To attach a new band, slide each piece in until you feel or hear a click, then give it a light tug to confirm it is locked.

Before You Start

Take the watch off your wrist and work over a soft cloth or towel. This protects the screen if the watch shifts while you press the release button.

Also make sure the new band belongs to the correct case-size family. On most current Breezsy product pages, Apple Watch bands are grouped into two buying options: 40 / 41 / 42mm and 44 / 45 / 46 / 49mm. If you are not sure which option to choose, start with our Apple Watch band size guide.

Some bands with built-in cases or mod kits attach differently, so follow the product page instructions for those designs. For a standard Apple Watch band connector, the release buttons are on the back of the watch.

The release buttons are the slim buttons near the band slots on the back of the watch.

How to Remove the Old Band

  1. Turn the watch face down. Keep the screen on a soft, clean surface.
  2. Press one release button. Hold the button down with your fingertip or nail.
  3. Slide the band sideways. While pressing the button, move that side of the band horizontally out of the slot.
  4. Repeat on the other side. Remove the second band piece the same way.

Do not pull upward. The band releases by sliding sideways.

If the band does not move, stop. Press the release button again and try a small side-to-side motion. If it still feels stuck, do not force it. Use the safer troubleshooting steps in Apple Watch Band Stuck? Here's How to Fix It.

How to Attach the New Band

  1. Check the direction. With the back of the watch facing you, the printed size text on the band should also face you. If your band has no printed text, slide it in gently and flip it if it does not click.
  2. Slide the band in straight. Move the connector through the slot from the side, not from above.
  3. Listen or feel for the click. That click means the connector has locked into place.
  4. Test both sides. Give each band piece a light tug. If either side slides out, remove it and insert it again until it locks.

Quick Checks After Changing

  • If the band slides freely: it is not locked. Remove it and slide it in again until it clicks.
  • If the band feels too tight or loose: adjust the clasp, holes, or links before wearing it all day. For link-style bands, use our Apple Watch band adjustment guide.
  • If you switch bands often: that is normal. Just use the release button and keep the connector slot clean. We cover the long-term question in Is It Bad to Change Apple Watch Bands Often?.

Once the band clicks in and passes the tug test, your Apple Watch is ready to wear. You can use this same process to switch between workout bands, daily bands, dress bands, and travel bands.

FAQ

Do I need tools to change an Apple Watch band?

No. A standard Apple Watch band can be removed and attached by hand. Press the release button on the back of the watch, slide the band sideways out, then slide the new band in until it clicks.

Which way should an Apple Watch band go in?

With the back of the watch facing you, the printed size text on the band should face you as you slide it into the slot. If the band does not click, remove it, flip the direction, and try again gently.

Why won't my Apple Watch band slide out?

The most common reasons are an incompletely pressed release button, sweat or dust in the connector slot, or a tight third-party connector. Do not force the band. Press the button fully, clean around the slot, and use a stuck-band guide if needed.

Is it bad to change Apple Watch bands often?

No. Changing bands often is fine when you use the release button, slide the band sideways, and avoid forcing the connector. Rotating bands can even help sweaty bands dry between wears.

Can any Apple Watch band fit any Apple Watch?

No. Apple Watch bands are interchangeable only within compatible case-size families. On Breezsy product pages, choose the case-size option that matches your watch, usually 40 / 41 / 42mm or 44 / 45 / 46 / 49mm.
